Proban (PROBAN®) was first developed in the 1950s and is a fire retardant chemical that can be applied to cotton and other cellulosic fabrics. The chemical in no way affects the physical properties of the fabric that it is applied to as there is no chemical reaction between the two elements. Proban fabrics enjoy widespread use in industrial, military, civilian and racing applications, and have developed a proven reputation as a tough, reliable fire retardant material. In the event of fire, Proban cotton decomposes and burns into a localized charred section that serves to act as a barrier. The fabric has no afterglow, does not smolder and flame does not spread outside of the immediately affected area, which means only fabric that is directly exposed to flame will burn.
